About Yala

Step into the untamed beauty of Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated wildlife destinations. Located in the island's southeast, Yala is a remarkable landscape of dry forests, open scrubland, natural lagoons, rocky outcrops, and coastal wetlands, offering an unforgettable safari experience for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Drives leave the gate at 5.30am and 2pm. Five hours from Colombo, and most people stay at Tissamaharama. Strongest from February to July, and block one usually closes in September.

Famous for its leopards, Yala draws visitors from around the world hoping to catch a glimpse of these magnificent big cats in their natural habitat. Yet the park's appeal extends far beyond its iconic predators. From elephants roaming through the bush to crocodiles resting beside lagoons and colourful birds moving across the wetlands, every game drive brings the possibility of a new discovery.

A land of leopards and wild encounters

Yala is particularly renowned for its Sri Lankan leopard population and is widely recognised as one of the world's notable destinations for leopard watching. Its varied terrain provides shelter and hunting grounds for these elusive animals, although sightings always depend on luck, timing, and natural conditions.

The park is also home to Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, water buffalo, and several species of monkeys. Along the water's edge, you may spot mugger crocodiles, while monitor lizards and other reptiles inhabit the park's diverse ecosystems.

Every safari unfolds differently. One moment, you might be following fresh tracks through the scrub; the next, you could be watching an elephant emerge from the forest or observing a peacock displaying its brilliant plumage in the morning light.

When is the best time to visit Yala?

Yala is generally popular for wildlife safaris during the drier months, when animals may gather around remaining water sources and visibility through the vegetation can improve. February to July is often considered a favourable period for wildlife viewing, although conditions vary each year.

Morning and afternoon game drives offer different experiences, from the cooler early hours when wildlife may be active to the warm golden light of late afternoon. Leopard sightings are never guaranteed, but patience and time in the park can make the experience especially rewarding.

Yala's seasonal park closures and access arrangements can vary, so it is worth checking current conditions when planning your visit.
