Electric Car Rental in Sri Lanka
Electric cars have arrived on Sri Lankan roads in numbers, and running one costs a fraction of a petrol car per kilometre. For city driving and day trips out of Colombo, an EV is the cheapest way to cover ground on the platform.
The EVs listed here are owners’ own cars — including BYD, Nissan Leaf and others — rented directly, with the charging arrangement explained on each listing.

Charging on the island
Charging is straightforward in Colombo, where public chargers are spread across the city and most hotels will let you plug in. Outside the Western Province the network is thinner and slower, so a long hill-country itinerary needs planning in a way a petrol car does not.
Ask the owner which cable comes with the car and what it charges from. Most will also tell you which chargers they use themselves, which is more useful than any map.
Is an EV right for your trip?
For Colombo, the airport run, Galle and the coast, comfortably yes. For Nuwara Eliya, Ella and the east, plan the charging stops honestly — climbing uses range quickly, though you get a good deal of it back coming down.
If the itinerary is long and remote, a hybrid gives most of the fuel saving with none of the range planning.
Questions people ask
Can I rent an electric car in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Owners list EVs including BYD and Nissan Leaf models; availability varies, and this page shows what is currently on the platform.
Where can I charge?
Public chargers are common in Colombo and increasingly along the main routes. Coverage in the hill country and the east is thinner.
Is a charging cable included?
Owners normally supply one. Confirm which type it is with the owner before you book.
How far can I drive on a charge?
It depends on the car and the terrain. Expect noticeably less on long climbs into the hills.
