Car Rental in Galle

Galle is ninety minutes from Colombo on the Southern Expressway and the natural base for the whole south coast. Owners here rent to visitors staying in the Fort, in Unawatuna and along the beaches towards Mirissa and Weligama.

A car makes the coast genuinely open to you: the good surf breaks, the turtle hatcheries, the stilt fishermen and the quieter beaches are all strung along one road, and none of them keeps to a bus timetable.

The Fort and parking

Galle Fort is a walled grid of narrow streets, and driving inside it is more trouble than it is worth. Park outside the walls and walk; the whole Fort is twenty minutes end to end on foot.

A smaller car is a real advantage along the coast road, where parking is roadside and often tight between a wall and a tuk-tuk.

Along the coast

Unawatuna is ten minutes east, Weligama thirty, Mirissa forty, and Tangalle a comfortable ninety. Inland, Sinharaja rainforest is about two hours on roads that deteriorate as you climb — ground clearance helps on the last stretch.

The coast road is busy, slow and full of buses with their own ideas about overtaking. Budget more time than the distances suggest.
