Car Rental in Negombo and at Colombo Airport

Bandaranaike International is ten minutes from Negombo and forty minutes from Colombo on the expressway, which is why most visitors start their rental here rather than in the city. Owners will meet an arriving flight, hand over the keys at the terminal or at your Negombo hotel, and take the car back the same way at the end of the trip.

Starting at the airport also means your first drive is the expressway rather than Colombo traffic, which is a gentler introduction to driving in Sri Lanka.

Meeting your flight

Give the owner your flight number when you book. Arrivals are tracked, so a delayed flight does not mean a missed handover. Most arrivals from Europe and the Gulf land between one and four in the morning, and owners here are used to it.

If you would rather sleep first, book the car from the next morning and take a taxi the ten minutes into Negombo.

Where you can go from here

Colombo is forty minutes down the expressway. Kandy is about three hours. The whole west coast north of Negombo — Waikkal, Kalpitiya, Wilpattu — is easier from here than from the city.

Heading straight south to Galle or Mirissa is a four to five hour drive using the airport expressway and then the Southern Expressway, with no need to enter Colombo at all.

Questions people ask

Can I pick up a rental car at Colombo airport?

Yes. Owners meet arriving flights at Bandaranaike International; give them your flight number when you book.

Is there a fee for an airport handover?

Some owners charge a delivery fee for the airport. It is shown by the owner before you confirm.

What if my flight is delayed?

Owners track the flight number you give them, so a delay simply moves the handover.

Can I drive straight to the south coast from the airport?

Yes, via the airport and Southern Expressways, which bypass Colombo entirely. Allow four to five hours to Mirissa.
