Wilpattu

Sloth bears and leopards

The island's largest park, built around villus — shallow natural lakes ringed with pale sand. The cover is dense, so sightings come less easily than at Yala, but you share the tracks with a fraction of the vehicles. Sloth bears come out for palu fruit around June.

Kaudulla National Park

Sri Lanka's Seasonal Elephant Gathering Sanctuary

Kaudulla takes over when Minneriya floods. From October the herds move north to this tank, which stays quieter than its neighbour and often gives the better photographs in the last hour of light.

Eco-Park Habarana

Wild elephants in dry-zone forest

Hurulu Eco Park sits in dry tropical forest near Habarana, in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province. Wild elephants move through its clearings and seasonal water sources as conditions change across the dry zone, which makes it one of the island’s most rewarding places for an elephant-focused drive. The herds move between Hurulu, Minneriya and Kaudulla with the season, so no two drives are the same.
